At Symantec we realize that whatever you use your computer for, you don’t want it slowed down by top-heavy security software. This year we evaluated every line of code, every possible interaction with the goal of providing comprehensive security that won’t slow you down. That’s why the theme of the 2009 Norton products is Smart Security, Engineered for Speed.
Initial Scan Time
Performance is important. The only thing more important is security. On the first scan, Norton’s 2009 products scan your system with particular thoroughness, taking care whenever it can to remove any traces of any infections it finds. Even so, Norton AntiVirus 2009 and Norton Internet Security 2009 offer some of the fastest initial scan times in the industry.
Subsequent Scan Time
Antivirus products typically scan the same files over and over both because they don’t know what has changed and because they never know what might be infected. With Norton Insight we use the results from countless scans to separate files that are safe from those at risk. The result is that our products actually get faster over time. Subsequent scan times are lightning fast because we scan fewer files – without sacrificing security.
Installation
Streamlined, rapid installation gets you up and running quickly with only one mouse click in, on average, less than one minute**. Foregoing Microsoft’s Windows Installer technology, the 2009 Norton products instead use our proprietary streaming installation tools to get your computer secured in record time.
Memory Utilization
Designed to have little impact on system performance, Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus use on average less than 7 MB of memory between system scans.
Hard Disk Footprint
In 2009 Norton evaluated every line of code in our products with the intent of ensuring they have as little impact as possible. The 2009 editions use significantly less disk space than previous releases – and less than most competitors.
Boot Time
No-one likes waiting for their computer to boot. The least we could do is try not to extend the pain. Norton’s 2009 products add less than 11 seconds to the boot time of the average PC.
Internet Explorer Launch Time
The single most common act on a computer is to open the browser. We have made special efforts to help ensure that when you go on-line, it won’t slow you down.
Processes
Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security 2009 were developed with the idea that less is more – less memory, less time spent scanning, and fewer running processes. As a result, they open only 2 processes, a sign of elegance of design.
Registry Keys
On Windows based computers, the registry is a directory of program information. Any developer can tell you that there is nothing wrong with adding a few registry keys to your system. However, some security products add more than a few – a few thousand more. Keeping an eye on the number of registry keys is one way to keep your system neat – and fast.
Average Memory During Scan
Our products are smart – smart enough not to bother you with system scans while you are working. But if you do want to use your computer while running a scan, it is good to know that we won’t hog your system’s resources. Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security 2009 use far less memory while scanning than most competitors.
